Residents Panic to Outside Houses, M 6.1 Earthquake Rattles South Manokwari

Kolom Media. The magnitude 6.1 earthquake in South Manokwari, West Papua, made people panic. Residents scattered out of the house.

The earthquake was felt to be strong enough for 6 seconds in South Manokwari Regency. "The community panicked and left the house or building," said BNPB Head of Information and Public Relations Center Sutopo Purwo Nugroho in a statement on Friday (12/28/2018).

An earthquake tremor was also felt in Manokwari District. In Manokwari, the earthquake was felt for 5 seconds.

"The earthquake was felt fast for 5 seconds in Manokwari Regency. The local community panicked. Currently fishermen and residents gather in the Regent's office or field," Sutopo said.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) previously said the earthquake occurred at 10.03 WIB on Friday (12/28). The epicenter was at 1.40 South Latitude and 134.10 East Longitude or 55 km southeast from Manokwari Selatan, West Papua.

The earthquake is at a depth of 26 km. "There is no potential for a tsunami," the BMKG wrote on a Twitter account.
