Residents Requested Alert, Anak Krakatau Alert

Poros Pos. Increased activity of Gunung Anak Krakatau since December 22, 2018 was monitored significantly until finally the mountain status was raised from alert to standby. On that same day, at night, there was a mountain slope which allegedly triggered a tsunami to hit Banten and South Lampung.

Secretary of the ESDM Geological Agency Antonius Ratdomopurbo said the Anak Krakatau eruption had not stopped since then. In addition, he said there was a change in the pattern of eruption activities.

"Then the status is increased because of course it provides a broader potential of power than we declare vigilant," Antonius said in his office, Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, Central Jakarta, Thursday (12/27/2018).

The change in the eruption pattern is called changing from strombolian to surtseyan. Strombolian means explosive eruptions throwing incandescent stones because there is pressure from inside the crater. Whereas the surtseyan type currently experienced by Anak Krakatau means lava or magma flow that comes out of direct contact with sea water. This type of eruption indicates the volume discharge of magma released increases and the crater hole enlarges.

He also called the mountain tremor in the Sunda Strait recorded every five seconds. The main flow of lava from Anak Krakatau is to the southeast.

The status improvement was carried out from 06.00 WIB on December 27, 2018. The community was asked to be more vigilant.

"The dangerous zone is expanded from 2 kilometers to 5 kilometers. The community and tourists are prohibited from carrying out activities within a 5 kilometer radius of the crater peak of Mount Anak Krakatau," said BNPB Head of Information and Public Relations Center Sutopo Purwo Nugroho in a separate statement.
