Wild Ivory Elephant Lost Found Dead Rotting in Aceh

Jurnal Hub. A wild male elephant was found rotting dead in Pantan Lah village, Bener Meriah, Aceh. The missing elephant's ivory was allegedly broken.

"This elephant is an elephant who was treated four months ago by the Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) and Unsyiah FKH," said Head of Aceh BKSDA Sapto Aji Prabowo when confirmed by reporters on Friday (12/28/2019).

This elephant carcass, nicknamed Bongkok, was found on the edge of the Peusangan River on Thursday (12/27) at around 19:00 WIB. An hour later, the police and BKSDA arrived at the location to conduct a crime scene (TKP).

The location of the discovery of the elephant carcass was about three kilometers from the settlement. To get there, it can only be passed using a wheeled vehicle. But 500 of the locations must be reached on foot.

From the results of the identification of the Bener Meriah police station, the elephant, estimated to be 40 years old, was allegedly dead since 15 days ago. This can be seen from its decaying condition.

"Ivory elephants are gone and the cause of the elephant's death is still under investigation," Sapto explained.

According to Sapto, the male elephant is one of the wild elephants in the Pintu Rime Region, Bener Meriah. At the base of the neck of the upper part of the elephant beforehand it has long been injured.

In addition, the elephant has also been injured at the base of the tail and has been treated. The police and BKSDA are still investigating the cause of the bowel elephant's death.

"We have coordinated with the Bener Meriah police station and last night we together with the Aceh BKSDA veterinarians team have already flown to the crime scene," said Sapto.
